Creating a welcoming community for immigrants can help to create a more healthy community for everyone, and such efforts to create health equity ensure that immigrants and refugees can participate fully and belong. This webinar discusses the advancements in health equity over the past 10 years while examining the social determinants of health, addressing health disparities among immigrants and refugees, and highlighting the importance of using a health equity lens in welcoming work.

This toolkit was created to be a communications resource for those working in the field of immigration and immigrant integration. It provides practical messaging tools and strategies that address people’s fears, anxieties, and prejudices head on. In that way, the messages in the toolkit are particularly designed to talk to those whose minds are not yet made up about immigration and the changes they may be seeing in their community.

While Shelbyville is, in many ways, a typical southern town, it is also unique. Several of the residents appearing in the documentary and on this website are active participants of the Welcoming Tennessee Initiative, a statewide effort to help improve relations between long-term residents and immigrant newcomers.

This tool provides an overview of strategies to engage the broader community in an immigrant integration context and offers numerous examples of projects throughout the country.
