Lotería Game
Lotería (“lottery” in Spanish) is a traditional Mexican game of chance, similar to bingo, but using images on a deck of cards instead of numbered ping pong balls. Every image has a name in both English and Spanish.
There can be as many players as you want and one Cantor (“Singer” in Spanish) who will be drawing and showing cards. Each player has at least one tabla (“board” in Spanish) with a randomly created 3 x 3 grid of pictures with their corresponding name and number. Players choose a tabla to play with, each has a different selection of images.
To start the game, the cantor picks a card from the deck and announces it to the players by its name, each player locates the matching pictogram of the card just announced on their board and marks it off with a chip or other kind of marker. In Mexico, it is traditional to use small rocks, crown corks or pinto beans as markers. The winner is the first player that shouts “¡Lotería!” right after completing a full tabla or a previous agreed pattern: row, column, or diagonal.
There are many versions of Lotería, sometimes the cantor uses a verse or rhyme before reading the card name. There is traditional Lotería, Children versions, Lotería in other languages, funny cards, math Lotería, and many more. You can also “sing” the names as you draw and make funny faces or voices.
ORIGINS OF LOTERÍA
Lotería started in Italy in the 1400’s, it was called Lotto and it was a drawing game where you had to obtain 5 numbers out of 90, and each number was associated to an image. It was adopted by Spain and brought to Nueva España, today Mexico, in the 18th Century, the game was an exclusive game played by colonial higher classes. Lotería became a popular street game all over the country during the Mexican war of independence (1810 – 1821) mainly used as a distraction for men and women soldiers, and eventually it became popular game in many homes. The version that we know today as the traditional Lotería is the “Campechana” version and it was developed in 1887 by a French Mexican entrepreneur called Clemente Jacques, this version showcases tarot elements and other traditional iconographies.

Juego de Lotería
Lotería es un juego de suerte tradicional de Mexico, muy similar al Bingo, donde se utilizan imágenes en vez de números. Cada imagen tiene el nombre en inglés y español.
Puede haber cuentos jugadores se desee y debe haber una persona quien debe hacer el rol de Cantor. El/la Cantor es quien saca las cartas, la enseña y “canta” o dice el nombre de la carta. Cada jugador tiene al menos una tabla con fotos y números. Los jugadores pueden elegir su propia tabla(s).
Para comenzar el juego, la/el Cantor comienza a sacar, decir y enseñar la carta. Cada jugador busca dicha carta en su tabla y agrega una ficha ¡Por cierto! En México se utilizan frijoles, tapaderas de refrescos o piedras pequeñas en vez de fichas. Cuanto alguien gana, deben gritar ¡Lotería! – para ganar se debe llenar la tabla completa o se debe de designar desde el inicio algún patrón a seguir: una fila, columnas, diagonal, etc.
Hay muchas versiones de Lotería, a veces el Cantor utiliza versos o rimas antes de leer la carta. Hay versiones tradicionales, de niños, en varios idiomas, cartas chistosas, de matemáticas y más. También se pueden cantar los nombres, o hace caras/voces chistosas.
ORÍGENES DEL JUEGO DE LOTERÍA
El origen se remonta a Italia, aproximadamente en 1400. En aquel entonces, el juego se llamaba lotto y consistía en sacar 5 números de un total de 90, cada número estaba asociado con una imagen. Posteriormente su práctica se extendió hasta España y fue traído en el siglo XVIII a la entonces Nueva España. En un principio la lotería era jugada exclusivamente por las clases altas en la Colonia.
Fue durante la Guerra de Independencia de México (1810 – 1821), que la lotería se convirtió en un pasatiempo cotidiano entre los/las soldados. Les distraía del dolor de la guerra. Y así la lotería se extendió por todo México.
La lotería que todos conocemos en la actualidad está conformada por imágenes resultado del trabajo del empresario mexico-frances llamado Clemente Jacques en 1887.
Hay una versión más de la lotería, se le conoce como “campechana” e incorpora elementos del tarot y otras iconografías.
