Welcoming Week Event
Kickoff to Welcoming Week 2022: We Belong in San Antonio
September 8, 2022 - 6:00 pm
Please join us as we kick off Welcoming Week 2022 in San Antonio, a celebration uplifting our immigrant and refugee community, as well as the valuable work to make San Antonio a more welcoming place for all. Mayor Ron Nirenberg, Senator José Menéndez, and County Commissioner Rebeca Clay-Flores will begin our event with opening remarks. We will also hear about the innovative programs and research conducted by the University of Incarnate Word’s Lewis Center of the Americas at its campuses in San Antonio, Irapuato, and Mexico City. Attendees will be treated to a poetry presentation with Dr. Octavio Quintanilla, 2018-2020 San Antonio Poet Laureate, and a young poet activist Jascha Merchan. Our event will culminate with a short documentary film screening of The Price of a Dream co-authored by Dr. Kiku Huckle and Dr. Katsuo Nishikawa Chavez, exploring the experiences of Dreamer youth after they are deported to Mexico. Light refreshments will be provided by CIELO Unity in Action and Alamo City Human Rights Chapter. Doors open at 5:45 PM. Presentation begins promptly at 6:00 PM.
This event is organized by the City of San Antonio Immigration Liaison and Jen Yanez-Alaniz of CIELO Unity in Action and hosted by the University of the Incarnate Word Lewis Center of the Americas.
