This Welcoming Week, Congress must find a permanent solution for Dreamers

As Welcoming Week is underway this week across the world, we in the United States are dismayed by the latest ruling on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Although it does not impact current recipients, this decision, when it is appealed, will go before the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals and continues to put the future of undocumented people and their families into jeopardy.

Dreamers are a generation of nearly 800,000 young adults who came to the United States as children. They have grown up as Americans, pledging allegiance to our flag, and working side by side with all Americans to forge a stronger nation. Through DACA, they have been able to work legally, share their talents, and contribute to the economy without fear of being deported.

This Welcoming Week — a time when communities proudly show their welcoming and inclusive values — we urge Congress to find a permanent solution for DACA recipients, a policy that most Americans support, and send the message that Dreamers belong here.
