Statement from Welcoming America on Threats to Resettled Americans’ Status

This Thanksgiving week, as families across the country gather around tables, the Trump administration announced plans to re-screen 233,000 Americans who arrived as refugees between 2021 and 2025.

This government may take away their status. If a promise to any American can be taken away, what does that mean for all of us? Strong communities keep promises and stand up for our neighbors. Now is the time.

Who do we want to be as a country?

The people affected are us. People raising our children here, working, paying taxes and investing in their communities.

Now people are being asked to relive their trauma. To prove themselves again. To live in fear while the government plays politics and throws obstacles in the way of caring for family, volunteering in communities, opening businesses, and building the lives that all Americans—new and longtime alike—work toward.

This isn’t just about questioning the status of 233,000 people. When those in power can arbitrarily strip anyone of their legitimacy as Americans, we all stand to lose.

We should be helping people belong. Instead, this policy creates chaos and scapegoats neighbors who are already home.

Americans are tired of being told to be afraid of each other. We want to be fair, keep our promises, and invest in communities that help people belong and thrive. Every day, local leaders show what we are capable of. We all have a part to play in building the country we want to live in.

What You Can Do:

This policy hasn’t been implemented yet. Your voice matters.

Take Action:

  • Contact your elected officials. Tell them to protect refugees in your community.
  • Check in on your neighbors. If you know families who may be affected, reach out. Let people know they're not alone.

Change the Narrative:

  • Use humanizing language. Share real stories and talk about the impact on everyone in the community.
  • Call out scapegoating. When you hear people blame immigrants and refugees, speak up around your values and with facts about how they contribute to our communities.
  • Focus on what connects us. Most people want the same things: safe communities, good schools, a place to belong. Whether you came here as a refugee or have been here for generations, we all want to build good lives.
