Movie Screening: Dark future, Black Anniversary of Afghanistan
A Year After the Fall of Kabul
Afghanistan is experiencing a profound humanitarian crisis. With the retreat of United States forces and the collapse of the government, the Taliban has seized control of the country on August 15th 2021 almost 20 years after being ousted by US-led troops, and hundreds of thousands have fled their homes in fear for their lives. As many of us watch on feeling helpless, Amnesty International SA/NT is hosting a film fundraiser along with the support of the Afghan Culture Association of South Australia.
Join us to watch the award-winning short film ‘The Dark Future’ by Alibaba Frutan followed by a night of speakers, food and a fashion show with the local Adelaide Afghan community.
100% of ticket sales will go to Amnesty International Australia, the Afghan Culture Association of South Australia and the In Need Foundation.
The lives of women and girls in Afghanistan are being devastated by the Taliban’s crackdown on their human rights, according to an Amnesty International report, Death in Slow Motion: Women and Girls Under Taliban Rule.
Since they took control of the country in August 2021, the Taliban have violated women’s and girls’ rights to education, work and free movement; decimated the system of protection and support for those fleeing domestic violence; detained women and girls for minor violations of discriminatory rules; and contributed to a surge in the rates of child, early and forced marriage in Afghanistan.
The report also reveals how women who peacefully protested against these oppressive rules have been threatened, arrested, detained, tortured, and forcibly disappeared.
“Less than one year after the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, their draconian policies are depriving millions of women and girls of their right to lead safe, free and fulfilling lives,” said Agnès Callamard, Amnesty International’s Secretary General.
In need foundation (INF) is a trusted not-for-profit foundation based in Adelaide, South Australia dedicated to helping address extreme levels of poverty in Afghanistan through humanitarian relief, development assistance and up-skilling.
Since 2022 INF has committed to delivering separate projects inside Afghanistan using a diverse group of on the ground employees and volunteers that have a strong understanding of the country and the social and economic disadvantage experienced by vulnerable people.
