PLACITA LATINA: Salsa On The Square and other mini-events

PLACITA LATINA: CELEBRATING HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH AND WELCOMING WEEK IN DECATUR AND AVONDALE ESTATES

Latinx culture is coming to Decatur and Avondale Estates, with a colorful and historical series of events to be held between the two cities during Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15, 2021). Hispanic Heritage Month was created to promote the history, culture, and contributions of Hispanic Americans, from one of over 30 countries and territories that make up Latin America. Placita Latina (or “Small Latina Plaza”) is an opportunity to bring together rich and diverse Latinx entertainment, flavors, and cultures to both Decatur and Avondale Estates. The result is Placita Latina: a series of weekly “mini-events” that highlight Hispanic/Latinx performance, food, and culture, from September 15, through October 15, 2021.

These “mini-events” will include a mix of Latinx-inspired music, dance, art, education, and flavors. Please feel free to join us for one (or all) of the other mini-events:

• Salsa On The Square and La Choloteca “After Party:” September 18, 2021 Salsa Band Performance & Dance Instruction: 6:00 to 8:00 PM, La Choloteca “After-DanceParty:” 8:00 PM to 10:30 PM. Both events on the Decatur Square.

• La Placita Latin American “Coffee Tasting” and Performance (co-branded with “Welcoming Avondale”): September 16, 2021
4:00 to 7:00 PM at Banjo Coffee, in Avondale Estates, in partnership with also include an “After Party,” from 7:00 to 10:00 PM at the “Beer Growler” in the same location.)

• Placita Latina Mercadito “Pop-up Market:” October 3, 2021, between 1:00 and 5:00 PM, at the Lost Druid Brewery, in Avondale Estates.

• Emerging Latinx Artist Showcase (in partnership with the Decatur Arts Alliance): September 9 – October 8, 2021 (Closing Event, Time: TBD) at the Decatur Visitors Center

When some people think about “Latin America” they are often unaware of the diversity of the people, history, food, music, culture and even languages from the countries included in this group. Placita Latina was conceived to help create awareness of the many perspectives and people who are part of all of our
communities.
